Lectins are a group proteins that bind carbohydrate chains (sugar chains) on other molecules such as antibodies. They play an important in cellular attachment, mediating phenomena such as viral and bacterial attachment to cells, but also cell-cell interactions. Beyond cell adhesion, lectins are also important in immune regulation, glycosylation of proteins, blood protein levels, and more.
